Wine Country Capers, Day One

by irene on October 3, 2007

Our day started off nice and early – we headed to the airport at around 5:00 AM.  Flights were relatively uneventful, apart from our extended stay on the runway in Minneapolis.  Over an hour of sitting in one spot and doing nothing, while planes around us packed into the line that wasn’t moving.  If there is one redeeming fact about the situation, it was that we were in first class.  Thank God for first class!

First Class BreakfastSpeaking of First Class, here’s the breakfast they served us.   It consisted of an unnatural Swiss Cheese Omelet, with sausage and something that appeared to be potatoes, slightly decaying fruit (I’m really not exaggerating here – there were growths on the strawberries!) and a very dry roll.  If one was adventurous enough (or hungry enough), one would eventually find that the very dry roll had something that passed as jelly in the middle.

Strawberry Banana YogurtBut at least there was Strawberry Banana yogurt.  You can’t rule ruin Strawberry Banana yogurt, right?  Oh, yeah.   Have I mentioned that I’m allergic to bananas?

But that’s airplane food, and anyone who has travelled at all knows what they are in store for when then get on the plane.  Some who have travelled enough even come to crave the unnatural entity which is “Airline Omelet”.

A few shots along the way:

We got to San Francisco, loaded into our rented convertible, and drove through the heart of downtown in search of Highway 101. We had our trusty Millie on hand to guide us. (Millie is the voice of our GPS system. She has a very annoying voice. I’m tempted to trade her in for one of the other voices soon). We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, stopped to snap a few photos from the other side, then headed up to Sonoma County.

After a long day of travel, we merely settled in, searched out dinner (New York Strip with Wasabi Au Jus and Sea Bass over Asparagus, Mushroom and Heirloom Tomato Risotto), had a bottle of wine, and called it a day. We went to sleep with visions of soon to be visited wineries dancing in our heads.
