Economics has a lot to do with me being a foodie. It's much less expensive for me to make a superior meal at home than to go out for fast food. I love the challenge of recreating foods from stores or restaurants and making it better, fresher, and personal.

And you nailed it with the emotional componenet of food. It's not just about nourishment for the body. It is about feeding the soul. Families are built around the kitchen table.

I think you're spot on, especially about good food not being necessarily expensive. It's much more about the attention and process -- social and technical -- of growing and preparing real food.

I think political issues relating to food are extremely important, but if one doesn't have a personal relation to food, one's politics can end up contrived and stuffy.

While I don't like the term foodie, I love your description and would consider it a compliment to be called a foodie according to your definition!

I agree that "Wealth" is by no means a criteria for being considered a foodie. My great great grandparents were foodies and very financially poor. Those were the days of peasant food, they ate alot of tripe, gizzards(pretty much anything in the offal family of foods).Being italian they grew their own tomatoes, basil etc.... that with the homemade pasta and bread everyone ate like kings for very little money. Much thought and joy went into food and its preparation and in the sharing of it with family and friends. Their love of food has spanned generations, I am living proof. I live and breath food, not just the eating of it but all that it conveys in the spectrum of things.

I completely agree with you: yes, I would call myself a foodie, and for precisely the reasons that you list here. I believe that good food, made with love, is a powerful medicine, a way to bring people together and bring peace to our world. Far from being elitist, I think being a foodie helps me to eat well on a modest budget.
It is so sad to over-analyze every little word. The world has far bigger issues to worry about.

It is trendy to be a foodie. By nature, that also means that it is trendy to scorn a foodie.
