Edamame Anyone?

So, as like last year, I am now getting swamped with Edamame from my CSA. However, unlike last year, I vow to at at least try to use it this year!

Ahem… anyone know what to do with it? Suggestions are not only welcome, but begged for!

Hi Irene - I am so jealous that you get fresh edamame in your basket. I really have to hunt to find them around here. Lots frozen, but not many fresh.

Edamame don’t have to be cooked very much.

I usually make my water “as salty as the sea”, bring it to a boil, and toss the edamame in for a few minutes (approx 5 I would guess). Then you have lots of options. You can just serve them in a bowl and eat em like peanuts (my favorite way), shell add to a salad, or shell and make a salad of them by adding a bit of soy sauce and sesame oil. You can also shell them (raw) and add to a stir fry or add to steamed veggies (I do this a lot) with rice.

Ooooh, I’m jealous, too. When I get edamame from the store, I just steam ‘em and eat ‘em. Fresh or frozen, they’re always good. But organic, straight from the farm? That would totally beat all.

I agree — steam ‘em, salt ‘em, pepper ‘em, and eat ‘em! I, too, am extremely jealous of your fresh beans — only frozen edamame is/are available here… which is actually a miracle in itself, considering hardly anyone I know has even heard of it/them!

Yes, just steam them up and munch them. Excellent with beer (one of the true pleasures of Japanese summer.) I’ve also had them in miniature eggrolls, which is surprising but very good.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I guess I didn’t realize that fresh edamame was so hard to get your hands on. I obvioulsy need to appreciate it more!

I haven’t tried it yet this week. But I have some plans for tomorrow.

    Thanks again everyone!
