Southwestern Chicken with Black Bean Salsa

January 20, 2005

Southwestern Chicken with Black Bean Salsa Pssssssst….. So, off the record… does the show “Semi-Homemade” on the FoodTV network annoy you as much as it annoys me? Of course it does. And so I am Semi-Embarrassed to admit that this recipe is perfect for that show. On the other hand, I’ve been going into work [...]

White Christmas

December 26, 2004

In a bit of a surprise, Christmas morning dawned with the first snowfall of the season. This first snowfall was unusually late, and fairly welcome, given that the landscaping for our new house is on hold til the spring thaw, and it’s better to look at a blanket of white snow rather than a mud [...]

Sometimes you just go for comfort…

December 22, 2004

It is now officially winter in Wisconsin. That statement has nothing to do with what the calendar says, but everything to do with what the thermometer says. Temps in the negative digits, with windchills even worse are enough to convince me. So it’s time to make dishes not designed for their “gourmet-ness”, and certainly not [...]

Chicken Creole

October 27, 2004

With a bag of fresh spinach from my CSA on hand, and only a short amount of time to get dinner ready after work, I swung by the grocery store, picked up some chicken breasts, and planned on a simple, easy and fast dinner for this evening. There’s a restaurant in town called Louisiannes, Etc. [...]

Mystery Food

October 24, 2004

It’s a raspberry pudding…. it’s a strawberry cake…. it’s… it’s…. Shepherd’s Pie? Yes, it’s Shepherd’s Pie. My sister underwent some surgery this week, which left 3 young children at home to fend for themselves. Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. It’s rumored that her husband was there somewhere, but all I saw [...]

IMBB #7: Zigeuner Schnitzel with Spaetzle

August 22, 2004

When I learned that Jarrett, the brains behind Food Porn Watch, was hosting the latest IMBB #7, “You’re Just The Cutest Little Dumpling” only one question sprang to mind. Is Spaetzle a dumpling? So I googled it and found that there was some debate. Some people feel that Spaetzle is a pasta, some feel that [...]

Pasta, Potatoes and Pesto

August 9, 2004

We don’t grocery shop like most people. We very seldom shop for more than one meal at a time. Because we have our CSA box, in the summer almost any produce we use we already have. If we need tomatoes or peppers we go out to the backyard and pick them. This usually leaves meat [...]

Stuffed Peppers and Zucchini

August 4, 2004

I personally do not like bell peppers. I like just about any other kind of pepper, but there’s something about bell pepper that just rubs me the wrong way. I think it’s genetic – my sister feels the same way. Of course, the other member of this household LOVES bell peppers. There is a constant [...]

Pasta with Tomato and Grilled Italian Sausage

August 2, 2004

I’ve never been a fan of tomato sauce. Oh, I can eat it, but if I had my druthers, I’d be eating my pasta tossed with fresh tomatoes rather than tomatoes that had been cooked down into a sauce. A few years back, on an excursion to San Francisco, we stumbled into this little, dimly [...]

Beef with Peppers and Peas

July 24, 2004

Beef with Peppers and Pea Pods One of the few things we made this week with our produce from our CSA box. This week was very bad in terms of using the produce we got. It turned into a hectic week in general, and we went out to eat/carried food in too much. Next week [...]

IMBB #6: Tenderloin Chimichurri with Grilled Vegetables

July 18, 2004

When this month’s Is My Blog Burning? #6 was announced, I was a little bit disappointed that it was “Griller’s Delight”. Don’t get me wrong, we love to grill in the summer, but we don’t get terribly inventive, for 2 reasons: Reason #1: One of the members in this household stubbornly clings to a 15 [...]

IMBB: Tilapia with Bulgar and chickpeas

June 20, 2004
tilapia.jpg

Tilapia with Bulgar and Chickpeas Fish is one of the sort of foods that lend itself to inventiveness. Using fish as a backdrop, there’s literally hundreds of combinations of creativity that can be applied. Unfortunately, I live with the “fish challeneged”. It’s not that he doesn’t *like* fish… I think that would if he’d just [...]

Is My Blog Burning: Risotto ala Caprese

May 23, 2004

Risotto with peas, pancetta and shrimp, ala caprese. When I read that this IMBB edition was about rice (hosted by chez pim), I knew immediately what I had to do to participate. Just a couple of weeks ago I had prepared my first risotto. I’d been aware of risotto – I knew it took some [...]

Penne with Peas and Pancetta

April 10, 2004

Tonight’s dinner was a penne pasta tossed with peas, pancetta, garlic, basil, onion and olive oil. It was served with a very nice Taurino Salice Salentino Rosso, which at $9.99 is a bargain!
