A Trip to Tubular Meat Mecca
Recently my wife and I had the occasion to head to one of the holy lands of tubular meats. Sheboygan Wisconsin. A two hour drive from Madison, Sheboygan is home to the greatest Brats in the world. For those who don’t speak sausage, “Brat” rhymes with hot, as in horseradish mustard, and is short for Bratwurst. “Brat” is not an unruly child. I wanted to try a real local eatery during our day trip so I searched the net for place to try. As you can imagine, searching for “Brat” and “Sheboygan” will give you lots of hits. Scanning past Johnsonville, Sheboygan Bratwurst Co. and others I found a place to try, The Charcoal Inn.
Now the Charcoal Inn has two locations in Sheboygan. We dined at the North location on Greele street. The Charcoal Inn can best be described as a hole in the wall diner. Counter service with a few tables and a wait staff that looks like they have been there for 30 years. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner the place caters to the locals and has won awards for its grilled sandwiches. After looking over the menu I chose the “Brat and Hamburger Sandwich” and my wife had the BLT. An
order of onion rings and fries for the sides finished off our lunch. My sandwich came wrapped in wax paper with a paper tray of golden onion rings. The Brat and Burger combo has always been a favorite of mine and I ordered mine with “the works” except of course ketchup. The works includes grilled onions, pickles and mustard on a hard roll. My only
complaint was that I didn’t order two! A simple but wonderful sandwich with that grilled meat goodness that you can not get from frying.
If your near Sheboygan and are looking to experience the local tubular meat cuisine, I would recommend you give the Charcoal Inn a try.
